it about?

Debt Collector

I pay my debts, and I
expect others to.
I was raised in the
slums of London, I knew nothing of privilege. My father was murdered when I was
seventeen. Morty figured my father’s passing meant I would automatically take
on dad’s debts. I refused.
And I paid for that
So did my sister.
So now I fight. All I
know how to do is fight. The best cash is in the states, so that’s where I am
now. A big fish called Vito came along offering me a “favor” when I
Another debt.
I paid for that one
I knew Kyla Hensley
would be trouble when I met her. But I wanted her. I could see through the
falsehood of her wannabe-slutty clothes and her sexy legs. So I chased her.
Besides, trouble is
my middle name.

I was brought up in
privilege, but I lacked everything else. My father is a business tycoon who
buys and sells and doesn’t care who gets rolled over in the process.
I never knew my
mother, and all I have of her is a photo with a note scrawled on the back in
French saying “I’m sorry.” The only Female Figure I had growing up is
my dad’s wife who is a bleach blond with seven boob jobs. We never bonded.
I drink. I party. I
meet guys.
But I wasn’t always
like that.
I’ve had a string of
lovers in the last few years, the worst and most recent of which was Vince
Somerset. My best friend Vera was dating a guy called Rory Cansoom who is the
opposite of Vince in so many ways, and yet so the same.
She and I hit the
road for spring break, getting away from the two college psychos and just
trying to have some fun.
But there’s a funny
thing about trouble, the more you run from it, the more it finds you.
Which is when I met the Debt Collector.
It was only supposed
to be sex. He made that clear. I made that clear.
That’s all it was
supposed to be.
I never expected to
fall in love. I never expected to fall so deeply,
madly, uncomfortably
in love with a man who is wrong, so wrong for me.
And yet…so
unbelievably right.

She’ll soften me.

She’ll break me.

But I don’t care.

“Tell me for real,” I say. “Tell me what I didn’t guess about you.”

Logan doesn’t answer, and already I’m regretting the question. I know something hurt him, but who am I to ask him about it so soon? I’m breaking my rule, I want to know him, I want to know everything about him.

He shifts his arm so that my head is no longer resting on it, leans forward.

I did overstep it, but I don’t care. Maybe this is the last time I’ll ever see him again, and I want to get everything I can out of it, not only the sex I’ll demand later.

He looks down at his feet, then at me.

He inhales a deep breath, and then he says something to me that will forever change the way I think about the world. He tells me a story that puts my own life in perspective, and makes me question what I’ve held dear, and what’s really important in life.

He tells me about how he lost his father. And his mother.

And why he fights.

And why he continues to fight. And what he really sees when he’s in that cage, the hate, the fury, the pain.

By the end of it all, my world is shattered, the floor is shaking, I have no stability.

By the end of it, I know one thing, and I know it to my core, my very fiber. And I don’t care if it’s too soon, I believe in intuition, I believe in it more now than ever.

The thing I know is this:

I love this man. I love him irrevocably. I love him more than I’ve ever loved anyone.

And I know I will lose him.

I know it. More intuition.

But I love his very soul.

IndieWritersReview’s Music Monday Spotlight! Australian singer-songwriter (Pop) Artist Juliana! (Video/Making the Video Feature)

Happy Music Monday Everyone and today IndieWritersReview spotlights Australian singer-songwriter (Pop) Artist Juliana! ( Debut EP: Mere Mortal).

The transcendent power of a great song propels the listener to a place that is hauntingly familiar or completely new… Juliana’s biggest dream, is to connect and inspire through her melody and lyrics. Her sole purpose is to take her listeners on a journey.

Each song is a polaroid snapshot; her view of the world. As the melodies ebb and flow, so do her lyrics.

Her EP emulates the sense of dichotomy that is present within us all.. The idea that something is perfect because it isn’t, is what speaks loudest, in her newly released EP, Mere Mortal.

Juliana takes great inspiration from Sia’s bravery with intervals, to Halsey’s lyrical edginess and Katy Perry’s pop sensibility. Her depth as an artist owes a great deal to her youthful immersion in music from The Red Hot Chili Peppers, to Beyonce.

Juliana has been heard by many successful music industry professionals, such as Susie Ahern, Steven Memel, Desmond Child and Robin Frederick. In 2015 her debut single, “Waterfalls” was added to VEVO. It garnered a great deal of interest from online press worldwide. The video was directed by Blake Farber (Beyonce: Countdown).

Her song Speechless, was added to radio in Australia on high rotation and she looks forward to taking her music to the next level.

“Her blood type,” she whispers in a hushed voice to the man. “It’s . . . changing.”
I may not know much about science, or anything medical having to do with the human body, but I know enough to be fairly certain that what she’s saying isn’t possible. Not naturally at least.
I gape at the man, but he doesn’t say anything. He doesn’t even seem to react to this news. His eyes simply follow the code for a while, his fingers rubbing his chin as if deep in thought.
When the process is finally complete, the sphere stops spinning and sinks back to the desktop, landing with a soft thud against the glass surface. Within seconds of touching down, the metal shifts until it’s once again nothing more than a silver bowl filled with blood.
The man straightens up, but his hand remains planted on his chin. Everyone in the room watches him in silence, as if waiting for him to speak.
Including me.
“Fascinating,” is all he says.
Without warning, he looks over at me, and my heart rate increases when his lips curl into a smile. For some reason, his expression is unnerving.
He begins to move toward me, his footsteps echoing off the floor—the sound growing louder as the distance between us shrinks. His gaze never leaves mine.
Stopping just in front of me, he flashes a kind smile. “Hello, Wynter,” he murmurs. “My name is Dr. Richter. I’ll be taking care of you.”
Taking care of me?
“Why am I here?” I breathe. My voice is shaky, and the dryness in my throat is apparent in each raspy word. “What are you going to do to me?”
“Shh, hush now,” he whispers. “All of your questions will be answered in time.”
He smiles once again, only breaking eye contact with me to glance down at his hand. I follow his gaze, the fear re-emerging when I see him pull a syringe from the depths of his coat pocket. His eyes flash back to mine, and I know he can sense my fear as well as the piercing screams tightly lodged in my throat.
“But for now,” he croons as he injects the syringe into one of the tubes in my right arm, “you must sleep.”
He takes a step away from me, that disconcerting expression still plastered across his face. I try to say something, but I can barely get out a single word before I feel the effects of the liquid as it enters my system. It rushes through me like a cold chill.
I want to fight against it, but it’s hopeless.
As the drowsiness returns to pull me under yet again, the doctor’s smile is all I can see.
