ABOUT THE BOOK

a fun plus 101

“If you are searching for answers about Hospice care this is an extraordinary read. This book not only defines the who, what, when, and where of Hospice, but also tells the heartfelt stories of a humbled medical social worker making the best of heart wrenching situations. Ms. Brown addresses many of society’s questions regarding Hospice in general. She ties in her personal experiences to make an informative, yet personal, story to educate individuals and families on Hospice. I enjoyed reading about the various encounters Ms. Brown has experienced. These experiences, most of all, enlightened me to a deeper journey in Hospice Social Work. This book is a must read!”

My Little People:A Social Worker’s Journey

Annie Clara Brown

What’s in a Name?

“Your little people, your little people, you always have to go see your little people.” Mrs. H was a patient with dementia who was a joy to visit in her home. She loved the color red and she loved people. Mrs. H. would always ask me when I visited, “Where have you been?” She was not oriented to time; therefore, she always perceived that each visit had been a long time off; however, my visits were made every two weeks. One day, when she asked where I had been, I replied that I had been visiting my little people. She began to speak in a mimicking voice, “Your little people, your little people, you always have to go see your little people.”
From that day on, this was basically how she acknowledged me when I visited. After she said the magic words (your little people, your little people, you always have to go see your little people), most of the time she would drift off into confusion. One day she thought the leaves on the trees outside her window had faces on them.

William Turner spent his formative years in New England. He was educated in the private, parochial school system, and is presently retired from State service (State of California), as a supervisor. He has one son (Ontonio), and three grandchildren. His grandson is serving in the United States Air Force. His daughter-in-law, Bridgette, is a practicing pediatrician. William had aspired–so long ago–to be a priest, but felt at the time he had not been exposed enough to life to walk away and close the monastery door. His subsequent exposure to life sullied him beyond any aspiration to the priesthood. William now lives in Lancaster, California, spending much of his time doing penance, reflecting on his countless errors in judgment. William’s penchant for writing mysteries stems from his exposure to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories and those of Agatha Christie. His mentor was Sister Agnes Bernard–his high school English teacher.

BILLY TURNER’S NEW NOVEL: “A MURDER IN OUR MIDST”

BLENDS PERIOD DRAMA WITH RACE-RELATED THEMES

Walter Mosley Meets Agatha Christie With Classic Twists

LOS ANGELES, CA– The historical mystery, “A Murder in Our Midst,” is a 1950’s era novel by Billy Turner that blends period flavor with the race-related themes of Walter Mosley as well as the classic twists and turns of an Agatha Christie novel.

The Story:

A handwritten letter arrives on the desk of decorated Scotland Yard detective Sir Robert Winchell.  It’s from renowned oil magnate Raymond Beevant, claiming that somebody is trying to kill him.  As a confidant of the Queen, knighted for his service, Winchell has grown accustomed to powerful people seeking his council.

Except this is different.

Winchell always knew that to have a friend was to be one.  But back when he entered Harvard as man of color in the 1950’s, he wasn’t sure how many friends he’d make – if any.  It was Raymond Beevant who proved him wrong in more ways than he could imagine.  Rushing to Beevant’s estate, Winchell discovers that Raymond has suddenly passed away.  His demise is about to test how far Winchell will go for his dearest friend.

Though the doctors rule Beevant’s death a suicide, Winchell begins to investigate and soon learns that even one’s closest companions keep secrets.  As Raymond’s share of the vast Beevant empire is hotly contested, Winchell discovers that Raymond’s own father unwitting set the stage for his son’s murder and that somebody has been using the family’s influence in the Middle East to acquire and leak sensitive U.S. defense documents.

With the military leaning on him hard, the police doubting his skill despite his credentials, and more suspicious killings at every turn, Winchell uncovers an illegitimate child as well as duplicitous land leases that will unravel his friend’s family yet tie up the mystery of Beevant’s death.  Winchell must decide what Raymond’s dying wish would have been – to solve his murder or save his name.  For the sake of his friend, Winchell must try to do both.

Tense race relations, a clash of classes, and international intrigue collide in this taut mystery, which will keep readers guessing.

“My background in government and my experience as an African-American raised during this turbulent time give me unique insight into this subject.  I’ve always had a passion for mysteries and now that I’ve retired from my position as a supervisor for the State of California, I’ve devoted myself to writing,” says, author, Billy Turner.

“A Murder in Our Midst” is the first in a proposed series following Sir Robert Winchell and the cases that will challenge his intellect along with his nerve.  Turner is currently at work on his first novel’s sequel:  Death Comes for the President.

IndieWritersReview Welcomes Launch day for Rise of the Faire-Amanti (Ascendant Series #3) by Raine Thomas! (Review Feature)

It’s launch day for Rise of the Faire-Amanti (Ascendant Series #3), and Raine Thomas is celebrating with a big giveaway! Read on for more details…

Book Blurb:

Stranded in the desolate Dark Lands, Kyr and Ty share a bittersweet reunion. Alametria lies on the brink of darkness. Their people are still reeling, believing she’s dead at Ty’s hands. With no other choice, many have turned to the Guardians and Advisor Vycor for guidance, never suspecting they’re being led to slaughter.

Kyr and Ty encounter overwhelming challenges in their fight to save their people: a deadly environment, murderous Marauders, and powerful protections preventing them from reaching the palace. When the journey itself could mean their deaths, the one thing that keeps them going is the thought of bringing VycorDane to justice.

Facing a battle on multiple fronts, lacking resources, and significantly outnumbered, Kyr and Ty must rely on each other in the race to save their planet. Will they beat the odds and restore peace to Alametria…or will Vycor’s evil destroy them all?

Excerpt:

Turning so he faced Kyr, he lifted a gloved hand to her shoulder. Are you sure you want to do this?

She nodded, but he saw the rapid pulse in her neck belying her fear. They were both struggling to ignore the flight reflex pounding in their minds.

He considered walking to the storage bay and pulling out the sleeping pallets Gren had packed for their use, but he worried that taking even that much time would have them both abandoning this plan and giving in to the protections. Instead, he bent down and kissed her.

The feel and taste of Kyr shoved every other thought to the far corners of his mind. Although it had only been a few days since he last touched her like this, he felt like a starving man being offered a sumptuous buffet. Her soft lips eased open beneath his, begging him to deepen the kiss. He obliged, rubbing his tongue against hers as she tasted him just as thoroughly.

He ached to touch her. He broke away from her long enough to yank off his goggles and gloves. She hastily did the same. As if of one mind, they didn’t stop there, stripping out of their flight gear with quick, purposeful movements. When Ty was done, he helped Kyr remove the rest of her clothing. Then they came together in a mad rush, their mouths once again finding each other in a searing kiss.

Open your mind to me, Kyr thought. Only to me.

Yes. Only you.

He barely processed her demand over the raging need coursing through his body, but understood what she wanted. Since their first time joining here in the Dark Lands, he had learned that he had to keep a barrier between them when they made love. If he didn’t, they ran the risk of their joined power spiraling out of control like it had that time. On the more practical side, there was also the fact that if he allowed himself to feel everything she felt, their lovemaking would be over practically before it started.

Trust in us, she encouraged him as her hands ran along the muscles of his arms and chest.

Heedless of the consequences, he did as she asked, fully opening his mind to hers.

MY REVIEW

The highly anticipated Rise of the Faire-Amanti, (The Ascendant Series Book 3) was  the perfect  ending to the series! I loved it! The story  opens with  Kyr and Ty  in the desolate Dark Lands. Along with their supporters they must make their way through the deadly environment, Marauders and barriers keeping them from the palace. But through it all they pull strength from their love and the fierce desire to protect their own! Vycor, just oh my goodness! I really do not believe I have hated an Antagonist as much as I’ve hated this one! But the fabulous Raine Thomas pulls no punches with the high-octane, fully satisfying ending! I can’t say more due to spoilers!:)

My next hated Antagonist would be Shaya, the fact she even called herself Kyr’s mother simply horrifies me and I am very pleased that Kyr has the strength of her own family to fill in spots left empty by her mother’s vindictiveness!

And lastly my Sem…I keep hoping…(**Hint, Hint Ms. Thomas) for a series with the sexy, fun and edgy Sem! I cannot believe that this is the end or the last we hear of him?!

Just as with all the previous  works of Ms. Thomas… Rise of the Faire-Amanti, is no exception, it is a well written read full of passion, romance, adventure, magic— and”getting your just desserts!” **cough, ahem…Vycor!**

I fully recommend this awesome novel to all those who enjoy Fantasy, Paranormal Adventure and Romance stories! This is definitely the series for you!!
