IndieWritersReview “What The Heck Is SteamPunk?” (A Closer Look)

Hello guys, I am now working on a new novella that will have SteamPunk elements…Racing For The Moon🙂 But with my being new to the genre, I am researching what I can regarding this fun and fascinating fiction, to make sure I am actually creating my Steam Punk world correctly. If you are like me, then your first question might be….what the heck is SteamPunk? Well, because of love of research…(sometimes a little too much…when I should be writing, I’m poking around for facts and tidbits:) I said I would share here and there what I learned:)

So What The Heck Is SteamPunk?

Steampunk is a genre which came into prominence during the 1980s and early 1990s and incorporates elements of science fiction, fantasy, alternate history, horror, and speculative fiction. It involves a setting where steam power is widely used—whether in an alternate history such as Victorian era Britain or “Wild West”-era United States, or in a post-apocalyptic time —that incorporates elements of either science fiction or fantasy. Works of steampunk often feature anachronistic technology, or futuristic innovations as Victorians might have envisioned them, based on a Victorian perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, and art. This technology includes such fictional machines as those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or the contemporary authors Philip Pullman, Scott Westerfeld and China Mieville.
Other examples of steampunk contain alternative history-style presentations of such technology as lighter-than-air airships, analog computers, or such digital mechanical computers as Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace’s Analytical Engine.
Steampunk also refers to art, fashion, steampunk jewelry, and design that are informed by the aesthetics of Steampunk literature.[1] Various modern utilitarian objects have been modded by individual artisans into a pseudo-Victorian mechanical “steampunk” style, and a number of visual and musical artists have been described as steampunk. from Wikipedia Steampunk

So what does all of that mean? From what I have read and researched…SteamPunk is whatever you wish it to be! A hodgepodge of fantasy, science fiction…can be be set in an alternate Victorian world or your characters could frollick around the Wild West! What I like about this genre is the only limit is the author’s imagination! Now with any genre, there are certain elements that define it…so will look at that in a future post…but if you’re like me who enjoyed Gothic Romantic Victorian tales…or a good paranormal…or a ghost story…even my newly acquired taste for fantasy and dystopian fiction…then this might just be the type of tale for you!

  1. I haven’t read much steampunk but I look forward to reading your book, Michelle. I’m thinking the recent Sherlock Holmes movies would be steampunk. Would that be right?

    • Thanks Emma:) I’m having fun researching and writing it:) Yes, the Sherlock Holmes movies as well as the old Wild Wild West movie with Will Smith…and the television show Revolution…has elements of SteamPunk! The more I delved into the genre, the more I realized how there was so many of the shows I liked that had a SteamPunk touch:O)
