Writing for the Love of it….

When I first started writing some eight years ago, I had dreams of grandeur and money bouncing around my head. Multiple submissions came back as rejections, and I learned. I learned that success would not happen overnight, that rejection is commonplace in the writing industry, and that an acceptance will not immediately provide you with a financial portfolio that rivals the greats like Nora Roberts and Stephen King.

I’ve now been officially published for a year and three months, and its work.

Once your story is written, you begin the long process of submission. Submit, wait, receive rejection, or revise and resubmit, or a contract, and more waiting. But, once that contract has been signed, a new wave of work is headed your way.

A slew of paperwork suddenly appears in your inbox. Biographies, blurbs, cover art requests, line tags, and the dreaded first round edits, a writer’s world is turned into countless hours of keystrokes and e-mails. After two to three rounds of content edits and a line edit or galley preview, you finally can breathe… momentarily.

Before release, you are required to promote. Some companies will set up blog tours for you, others will expect you to do the work yourself. More time is spent with your butt in the chair, creating blog posts, giveaways, and marketing tours.

But it doesn’t end there. Even after release, your marketing and sales are solely based on your ability to promote your work.

So, why do it? Why spend hours and hours creating and writing, editing and blogging, just for a meager salary at the end of the day?

We do it for the Love of it. The Love of our characters, the Love of writing, and the Love of putting something out there that is entirely our own. With the dreams of Nora Roberts’ and Stephen Kings’ paychecks still floating in our heads and the belief that we will one day make it big… we write. We edit. We blog. Until the next submission, the next acceptance, and the next round of edits… we are hotwired to believe, hope, and dream.

Trumpet Grrrl!

Now recording her 3rd release “Just Listen” with GRAMMY award winning producer Scott Jacoby, Trumpet Grrrl is on the rise! Her unique combination of trumpet, singing and keyboard has been turning ears; “Trumpet Grrrl’s low and sultry voice and her trumpet skills blow the listener’s minds”, praises the Music Historian. Originally from Maryland, TG moved to New York City in 2012. She has since recorded at Converse Rubber Tracks studios, become a RAW artist and recently released her music video “Rain Boots”, filmed by Cultural Productions and the first single from the EP “Just Listen”.

Born June 13, 1986 on a Friday, Trumpet Grrrl’s interest in music began early. At the age of 10, Trumpet Grrrl started playing trumpet in her elementary school band. Her obsession was immediate; youth music ensembles, private lessons and summer camps where just the beginning of her classical music training. She would go on to perform at Carnegie Hall and with the National Symphony Orchestra through programs such as the NSO Fellowship. She received a Bachelor’s of Music in Trumpet Performance from the University of Maryland in 2008. During her last months of college, Trumpet Grrrl formed the rock band La Coterie where she began to play keyboard, sing lead vocals and compose. After a fun and wild two years, she decided to leave La Coterie and a few months later officially started the project of Trumpet Grrrl. Here is when she started to teach herself to play trumpet and piano at the same time.

One fall day TG sat down to record some demo tracks, a month and half later she had an album. “The Basement Tracks” was released in October of 2010. The following January TG’s song “Amaryllis” was featured in the Washington City Paper’s One Track Mind. TG then went on to release her sophomore album on January 17, 2012. The album; “It All Starts Here,” was produced and recorded by Trumpet Grrrl and partially funded through a Kickstarter campaign. Trumpet Grrrl looks forward to demonstrating her musical growth when she releases “Just Listen” in late 2014.

Writing: A Career Or Your Hobby?

Writing: A Career Or Your Hobby?

I write full-time, as anyone reading this blog will know. I have been for the last two years, and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. I can think of no better job than being my own boss, creating something from scratch each day and then having to do most (if not all) of the work to make money doing it.

For years I wrote between work schedules, kids, marriages and divorces and a hundred other things. I wrote sporadically and I wrote random stories and have a ton of unfinished and/or vague ideas on hard drives, thumb drives, floppy discs and a dead Brother word processor. I wrote when I could and I just sat down and wrote something with no real goal in mind and no real focus.

Until two years ago, when it was sink or swim. I…

“The tracks are marked by a penchant for compelling guitar sounds,
masterful bass lines and dynamic drums. The songs are poignant post-punk
tales featuring lonesome vocals and intimate themes. The trio have crafted
an EP brimming with organic noise, lo-fi cred and tight, well blended, yet
individually distinct musicianship.”
