She was born in Michigan and grew up in the Dominican Republic, where she developed a bilingual fascination for writing, a love for history, and a taste for Merengue. Stonewiser: Heart of The Stone (Audio Book)

a fun plus 103

Winner of the 2009 Benjamin Franklin Award for best Debut Novel

Finalist for 2009 Foreword Book of the Year Award for SFF

Between truth and deception, between justice and abuse, a stonewiser stands alone with the stones. Or so begins the stonewiser’s oath. But what happens when a rebellious stonewiser discovers that lies have tainted the stone tales?

In a world devastated by the rot’s widespread destruction, only the tales preserved in the stones can uphold the truth and defend the Goodlands. In this world, stone truth is valued above anyone’s word, and stonewisers are the only ones capable of retrieving the tales from the stones, the only link between past and present, order and chaos.

Sariah is the most gifted stonewiser of her generation, but her talent does not atone for her shortcomings. A survivor of the Guild’s brutal training, she is curious, willful and disobedient. Yet not even Sariah is prepared for what she finds when she steals into the Guild’s Sacred Vaults: A mayhem of lies and intrigues that shatters her world.

Hunted, persecuted, and betrayed, Sariah must make an unlikely alliance with Kael, a cynical rebel leader pledged to a mysterious quest of his own. The fate of their dying world depends on their courage to overcome centuries of hatred and distrust. But not even the grueling journey has prepared them for what they are about to discover. Because nothing is really as it seems, and the truth is more intricate and devastating than they ever suspected….

My Review

I will start off saying that this was my first experience reviewing an audio book, and it was an awesome experience! Really, Melissa Reizian Frank did a fabulous job with the story-telling and I enjoyed the experience immensely:)…

Ms. Machado’s story in one word was fascinating…wow! The story concerns Sariah who is a Stonewiser and has always believed that the Stonewiser Guild and those of her kind stood for Justice and all that was True…but after a harrowing experience, she discovers that what she has been told lies and that there was betrayal within the Guild and she sets out on a journey to find the Truth…along the way she makes unlikely acquaintances and discovers much about herself and the Stonewisers.

I will say that I truly enjoyed Ms. Machado’s storytelling. This author is an expert at world building, the world she created was intricate, magical, dark and sometimes very painful. But Ms. Machado did a fantastic job of guiding her characters through the maze of this world which kept me on the edge of my seat through the telling of this story.

I liked Sariah and I admired her thirst for her calling…(the stones) and the strength she exhibited in not simply accepting what was told, but discovering the truth on her own terms…

Stonewiser was a gripping, novel that is Dark Fantasy at its best. Steady, engrossing pace, detailed and interesting plot that will keep the readers hooked and characters that are realistic and easy to become invested in their lives.

I fully recommend Stonewiser:Heart of The Stone to those searching for a fresh, unique voice in fantasy! I do recommend this for Mature readers.

a fun plus 101

So-o-o-o- I have always been a little curious about STEAMPUNK...the name was cool, and I always liked the outfits and gadgets associated with that genre:) ,lol So I decided to create a short with SteamPunk Tendencies:) But I had to do my research…started with…yep, that’s right…good ole Wikipedia, which says…

“Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery,[1] especially in a setting inspired by industrialisedWestern civilisation during the 19th century. Steampunk works are often set in an alternative history of the 19th century’s British Victorian era orAmerican “Wild West”, in a post-apocalyptic future during which steam power has regained mainstream use, or in a fantasy world that similarly employs steam power.”

Hmmm, even after reading the definition, I still found myself scratching my head! So I figured I needed to do MORE research, and I did a search on Goodreads, and found some awesome titles tagged as STEAMPUNK...I’ll definitely try them out!:)

Now I will  keep you guys in the loop on the challenge and  Guys, you are invited to join Coffee & Books and the writing challenge on Face Book:O)

Hey do you guys know of any great stories with Steam Punk tendencies??? If so, what are they???:O)

Gary Chattman is the noted author of three books, Coming of AgeIf I Should Die Before I Wake, and The Quixotic Teacher. His books span unique ideas not prevalent in today’s world; religious-based education that is individually motivated and educationally interesting; secular education that flies in the face of nonsensical standardized testing; and ridiculous education rules by educrats who have never taught. He celebrates the talent and world view of his students. He is a Bar/Bat Mitzvah/Judaica teacher for over thirty years; a piano teacher; a teacher for the S.A.T.; a teacher advocate and an advocate for his students. Blurb: Imagine you have become two different people. Today you are in the present, studying for your Bar Mitzvah. Then, suddenly, you dream that you have been transported back in time to Poland, and become caught in the Holocaust. Then you dream that you are in Poland in the Middle Ages. You are to be eradicated by gentile society that sees Jews as not chosen, but sub-human. How do you react? What is the true reality? How can you survive? What does it mean to be a Jew, today or then? And what about God? Is God listening to us? Does God care? Imagine you are Reuben Maimon, an impressionable young man of almost 13, about to take his Bar Mitzvah vows. He must question who he is, and what the ceremony’s purpose is. What is the point of a modern Bar/Bat Mitzvah if it doesn’t give Jews a link with the past? Imagine you are Reuben Maimon living these two different lives with the same cast of people, and not knowing what is the reality and what is the dream. Imagine what would happen if you die before you wake. Now imagine, if you were Reuben Maimon, if he should die before he wakes… Imagine.

“Austrian soloist Julia Hummer’s “one-woman-psychedelia” marks a beautiful midpoint between the wavering vocals and tender, spacious instrumentation of Mazzy Star, and the anthemic drive of Ride. Delicate guitar arpeggios meet earthy percussion in slow, colourful conversation on recent EP “Entangled And Entwined”.”

“Slow, droning rhythms hypnotize you as you are pulled in to the soundscape.Lush with reverb, her voice conjures images of the psychadelic 60’s.”

“The twinkling Shoegaze melodies soar with a passionate intensity, the song-craft seems bold and surprisingly muscular within Juleah’s devotional psychedelic tone – The supremely confident reverb is flaunted like an exquisite art-form, layered guitar chords provide a vast majority of the rhythm allowing her trippy vocals a lush and dreamy overtone. ‘Entangled and Entwined’ is only the tip of iceberg in relation to Juleah’s music, there’s another EP and a ten track long player from this very talented multi-instrumentalist available on Bandcamp, all offered in a ‘name your price’ format. A terrific collection of songs, Dream-Pop stretched between the points of sorrow and ecstasy – We most definitely approve.”

Author Deborah Allen, has picked up the pieces and put life together her way, on the pages of her second book The Church of Forgiveness. Available on, (Softcover; $12.45, December 9, 2013).

Blurb: Family and forgiveness are terms that should go hand and hand. In most family relationships, forgiveness is a speed bump of everyday occurrences. In this book, The Church of Forgiveness, life for Deborah Allen has its sweet spots and its sour patches. Learning to forgive is a journey Allen takes through the hallways of her church, high school and bedroom. TCOF is a collection of essays that Allen sat down and penned to share her experiences, good or bad, right or wrong. She shares it all in a way to gather the pieces of her life in words. She shares stories about her father and mother and their relationship. She shares her life as a preacher’s daughter growing up in the black church. She shares stories of how she dealt with learning about who her father was and how she began to accept and deal with that knowledge. She shares the heartbreak of learning her daughter had cancer and their struggle to overcome it. She briefly highlights her special relationship with her grandson, Drake. Ending the book with Family Matters, a recollection of how and why forgiveness is essential to move forward in life.

a awesome author

Excerpt is from the chapter, Family Matters
–  Even though she knew so many things about so many things, over the years, I found that I was unable to keep up with her brain swells and explosions. A child of the Depression, it would forever leave its mark on her. She carried the impact of the Depression with her. For example, in the years after I was born I remember her saying, “Why so many lights? Open the curtains a bit. But turn those lights off when you leave that room.”

Another thing she did that identified her as a Depression-ist was her need to wash plastic wrap and plastic bags after two, three or four uses as well as aluminum foil. “We can re-use this. It’s still some good,” she said.

Frugal and conservative, she didn’t believe in spending money unless absolutely necessary. She was abnormally energy-conscious. We huddled in her bed most winter nights, shutting two of the bedroom doors and the utility vents. An electric heater saved us from hypo-thermal exposure. I burrowed in close until she peeled herself off the sheets to go to work. I burrowed inside the warm spot she left and wished we were rich so she didn’t have to go.

She was a private-duty nurse and she had wealthy patients. They lived in Ladue or the outskirts of the city, in regal mansions set so far back from the street I thought there were hills underneath each bastion.

Each night as she readied herself for work, I sat on the steps, one railing spindle missing which left just enough room for me to fit my legs out, hold onto the spindles by my side and cry unremittingly for her not to leave me. This ritual played out like a tragic Shakespearean drama each night until I no longer fit between those two spindles. I can still see my younger self wailing at the wall I call Mama because mothers weren’t supposed to leave in the middle of the night. Mothers were supposed to tuck their children in and sleep the night away in the other room keeping them safe. I would get up at night and see my mother’s empty bed. I wondered if she was tired and needed a break. I also wanted to be with her most of all. My sister Janice slept soundly in the adjacent bedroom, substituting for Mama.
