Hello everyone today is Monday so that means music! I would like to throw the spotlight on the young, talented artist Birdy!
Website: Birdy Official website
The cover versions that, along with one original composition, made up Birdy’s self-titled, 1.5m-selling debut album were an extraordinary introduction to an artist who – despite her tender years and the fact that she was interpreting other writers’ songs – managed to stamp her instantly recognisable identity on all of them. A voice that plugged the listener straight into the emotional mains, and an innate understanding of texture, nuance and restraint, helped Birdy burrow deep beneath the skin of songs such as The xx’s Shelter, Bon Iver’s Skinny Love and The Postal Service’s The District Sleeps Alone Tonight. Topping the charts in eight countries, the album won rave reviews, many of which were dominated by one question: what next?
Eighteen months on from that debut, the 17-year-old Hampshire singer and songwriter is providing us with the answer. Birdy’s new album Fire Within could be described as her second debut, because it sees her stepping into, and shining in, a new role as songwriter-in-chief. Recorded in Los Angeles and London, Fire Within’s 11 tracks include her stirring, propulsive new single, Wings, the tender piano ballad No Angel and Light Me Up, the song that, more than any other, emphasises the dramatic developments in Birdy’s musicianship and writing over the past 18 months. The hushed vulnerability of her first album is there, certainly; nowhere more so than on No Angel and fellow lighters-aloft moments such as Words as Weapons, All About You and Heart of Gold – deeply personal songs that capture Birdy’s incredible ability to convey emotion with the subtlest of vocal and instrumental touches. But these sit alongside songs that strike out in bold new directions: the afore-mentioned Light Me Up comes out of the speakers like an unstoppable force, its brooding, bluesy verse giving way to a bridge that ups the pace towards a chorus whose power chords and thunderous beats draw out of a Birdy vocal performance you could never describe as hushed; on the contrary, her voice is bigger, richer deeper than before. All You Never Say, meanwhile, combines ricocheting beats with sonorous piano chords, a mix that is at once wintry and warm, as Birdy sings the devastating central refrain: “All you never say is that you love me so.”
The release of Fire Within will usher in a period of extensive touring and promotion, including in Australia, where her debut album went to No 1, and where, in April, Birdy played three sold-out nights at Sydney Opera House. She recently attended the London sessions where the string parts for Fire Within were recorded. “To be at Abbey Road and watch all these musicians performing on my songs was overwhelming.” When given the option to sing in a vocal booth or in the same room as other musicians Birdy prefers the latter. “The passion and emotion that I feel, that I need to feel, when I’m singing doesn’t always come across in a vocal booth. Being in the same room with the band, exchanging looks, pulling together for the song, all playing live, that’s when I feel it, and that’s what we wanted to capture.”
And the results? Well, Birdy wouldn’t be Birdy without resorting to a little self-doubt. “I never really know what’s good and what’s not,” she says. “I’m just doing what I love, and I’m sure of that.” Well, we know – and, yes, Fire Within is good. No, it’s more than good; it’s phenomenal.
Hello Everyone, today I am very happy to participate as one of the hosts for Beneath The Manhattan Skies by Author Emma Meade as part of her Bewitching Book Virtual Tours!
I will share my thoughts below about Beneath The Manhattan Skies, but please check out the details on this awesome read below!
Beneath Manhattan Skies
Genre: New Adult, Paranormal Romance (Vampires)
Number of pages: 186 paperback book
Word Count: 45,000
Cover Artist: Najla Qamber
November in New York is cold but full of possibility for college freshman Erin Harris. When her twin brother, Nick, shows up on her doorstep for a surprise visit, Erin is delighted. Unfortunately, Nick’s arrival coincides with the discovery of a body outside her apartment building, a body drained of blood. Right away, Nick assumes vampires are involved. He’s not exactly their biggest fan since Erin dated one in high school.
Juggling nosy roommates, a first date with a gorgeous guy from college and a brother on a Van Helsing kick is enough to keep any nineteen year old girl busy – And then Erin’s old flame walks back into her life.
Is Erin destined to be caught up in supernatural shenanigans, or will she choose a different path?
*Beneath Manhattan Skies is a standalone story, following the character Erin Harris from Under the Desert Moon.
Calm down, a soothing inner voice advised. Could be wishful thinking and nothing more. She wanted so desperately to see James, she was inventing vampire activity where there likely was none. Maybe the girl had simply suffered the hickey from hell. No. Erin’s gut told her she’d got it right the first time.
Max led the girl away. Lucky for him, in his cozy world, his friend was simply drunk, and vampires didn’t exist. Erin trailed them until they left the roof. At least the girl was alright. Nothing an iron tablet wouldn’t fix.
“Erin, you okay?” Sadie peered closer. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

Beneath The Manhattan Skies follows the characters Erin and her brother Nick from Under The Desert Moon. Although the characters are familiar, this is a stand alone novel. I really enjoyed seeing Erin and Nick again. Erin is now living in Manhattan where she is finally coming into her own and living a brand new life. But soon disturbances within her neighborhood happens-murders that appeared to be that of a vampire. She is drawn back into a world that she desired to place behind her once and for all. But when the danger comes closer to home and and someone from her past enters the scene, she becomes drawn into the mystery.
I enjoyed Sadie, Valerie, Patrick, Tommy the entire crew, the characters were all well rounded and defined. I fell in love with Tommy-the budding love interest. Erin was very strong, capable and smart. The author did a wonderful job of showing Erin’s growth and development from the previous book to this one:O)
Overall the plotting and pace was wonderful, there never was a lag in the story telling. Beneath The Manhattan had wonderful sprinkles of humor, there was action and romance!!
I fully recommend Beneath The Manhattan to those who enjoyed Paranormal or Romantic stories!!:O)
My new book, Beneath Manhattan Skies, is hitting the road this week. Today’s stop is a spotlight over at my friend Sandra Valente’s blog, Simply Sensational Book Fanatics. Sandra is sharing a short excerpt – Erin and her twin brother, Nick, are doing a spot of vampire hunting in a New York club, as you do.
Click on SS Book Fanatics, if you’d like to take a peek at that teaser.
Since I haven’t published a Music post in almost two months, I’m including Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” here today. Erin and her potential boyfriend, Tommy, dance to this in the club. I love this version.
Have a great weekend!
Hello Everyone! It’s Monday so that means music! Today I am throwing the spotlight on the very talented Jazz Pop Artist Clara Bellino! PLUS I will also share encore performances of the past two IndieReview Behind The Scenes Internet Radio’s Event week segments!
A delightful singer-songwriter with a
memorable story to tell, Clara Bellino emerged from France to become an important contributor to the American music scene. Her latest CD, This Is Happiness – Hand In Hand, not only features her newest song “This Is Happiness” and a memorable duet with the legendary Bobby Sharp (best known for “Unchain My Heart”) but also two videos and a documentary.
Clara Bellino was born in Paris, France, spent two years in the United States starting when she was five, and grew up in a small village of the French Alps. “I always loved music and wrote lyrics early on. When I was seven, I entered a conservatory, singing in the choir, studying classical piano for ten years and classical guitar for five. I also took a couple of years of jazz piano. Music brought me to the United States. I wanted to perform my own music and in France I felt as if I was stuck. The choices were to become a pop variety artist who had to have a hit in order to get on television, or to play classical or jazz. I felt that there were a lot more options to grow in music in the U.S.”
Since 1992, Clara has worked in many films (including starring as a singer in the 1993 feature film, Steal America) and commercials, and she has had extensive voiceover work, but music has always been her main passion. She led a band called the Flying Monkeys for several years and, when the group was disbanding, she recorded her first solo CD, Flying Monkey. In 2005 Clara recorded “Come And Stay With Me” for a compilation album (Juxtamusician) put out by a label from Austin, Texas. The single was also included in her next CD, Embarcadero Love.
“When I first came to the States, I wanted to perform what I called ‘sophisticated funk.’ By the time I recorded Embarcadero Love, I had been playing with most of the same musicians for several years. They were the band of my dreams. It was an all-black band comprised of former members of Tower Of Power, Sly & The Family Stone and the Commodores. Embarcadero Love is an eclectic set of music that I call ‘soulful pop.’”
Clara Bellino’s new CD came about in a roundabout way. “I wrote ‘This Is Happiness’ when I was in a tiny village in France where my brother and his wife own a farm. I played it in different places including a church and at a show in Paris, and it evolved. I initially just wanted to record a CD single.” Clara started working with producers Greg Sankovich (who plays all of the keyboards on “This Is Happiness”) and Lincoln Adler (who takes a beautiful soprano solo on “Hand In Hand” and tenor on “This Is Happiness”). Bobby Sharp had given Clara “Hand In Hand” several years earlier. Sharp originally wrote “Hand In Hand” in 1947 and over 15 years later Nat King Cole expressed interest in it. However Cole passed away and the song went undiscovered and unrecorded, until now. “Bobby Sharp and I had the same landlord who originally introduced us. We got to be good friends, he’s 87, and I talk to him every day. He had so much fun recording the piano track and being in the studio that I wanted him to be on the project. It was a pleasure working with him and he always has wonderful stories to share.”
The project expanded and the finished CD is full of high points. The set opens and closes with the catchy and exuberant “This Is Happiness,” a tune about the joy found in simple pleasures. It will certainly have audiences singing along. “Hand In Hand,” which is about a different type of happiness, that of love, is also heard twice with one version being a vocal duet by Clara and Bobby Sharp. Heard as a transition between songs is Sharp’s pretty instrumental “Driftwood.” As a special bonus to this enhanced CD, also included are highly appealing videos of “This Is Happiness” and “Hand In Hand” plus an informal documentary about the great Bobby Sharp.
Clara has been playing shows, showcases and benefits in Northern California including at the Great American Music Hall, The Paradise and most recently Café Du Nord. She looks forward to having a West Coast tour upon the official release of This Is Happiness – Hand In Hand.
Clara Bellino is a talent well worth discovering.
