Marianne spitzer

I was born in Milwaukee, and lived there until I was eighteen. Then I spent eight years in Washington state and California before returning to Wisconsin. I love eerie places and books. I began with a love of Nancy Drew books and as I grew I found H.P Lovecraft, Agatha Christie, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle among others. When I am not writing, I am reading or watching sunsets. I have been writing short stories since I was in grade school. Most were in the form of essays relating real life events. Many were purely imaginary trips to magical places and times. I enjoy making up stories about people I meet or see on the street. I can see a story in a picture, especially if the picture is eerie. My imagination runs wild and free. I have self-published a book of essays and a book of children’s stories for my granddaughter, Brittney. Gypsy Spirits is my debut novel, and the first in the series of three “spirit” books. I have self-published the second “spirit” book, Annamarie and Magdalena. I also self-published a supernatural mystery, THE LETTER. I plan to have the sequel to THE LETTER out this year and the third “spirit” book available winter 2013/14. From there I am sure my muse will guide me into another story plot.

Gypsy Spirits cover

Spirits? Madness? Which haunts Daniel? His teenage bride, Annamarie, must answer the question while she deals with her husband’s controlling behavior and abnormal fear of spirits he believes exist in the surrounding woods near their home. During an argument, her anger erupts and she yells a few odd words at her husband, Daniel, which she explains is her Gypsy curse. A bad day at work convinces him the curse is real, but after the brutal death of his best friend, his belief in the curse and his terror of the spirits escalates. Annamarie begins to have foreshadowing dreams of a young Gypsy girl who resembles her in every way. As the dreams become more vivid and frequent, Annamarie begins to fear her utterance of a Gypsy curse may have brought spirits into their lives. When they both have the same dream, she believes Daniel’s fears may be real. They feel they may be close to answers when a human killer enters their lives. With two battles to wage they must stand strong together. Frightening events spiral out of control and Annamarie must fight for her husband’s safety, his sanity and her own

The camp-fire cast shadows on the old wagons parked nearby.  An elderly man sat on a barrel, playing a violin. Other men and women sat near the fire clapping to the music floating on the night air. A dark haired young girl danced around the flames, her bright green eyes sparkling in the firelight. She was clad in a long dress of many colors, sewn by hand, colored ribbons pulled up her hair. She smiled and held her hand out to Annamarie.

Annamarie woke screaming.

Jolted from his sleep, Daniel jumped out of bed. “What the hell’s the matter with you?”

She sat up in the middle of the bed, her voice anxious, “I had a nightmare. I saw myself dancing, but I also saw myself watching me dance. Then the one dancing held out her hand to me.”

“Creepy!” Daniel started to laugh, “Serves you right for putting a curse on me.”

“I didn’t put a curse on you. It was just gibberish because you had me so upset. I’m not a Gypsy, so how could I do that? I only wanted to get your attention.”

“You’re going crazy. Don’t I have enough trouble with the spirits without you bringing a new one? What if the spirits here don’t like you summoning Gypsy spirits?”

“I don’t understand why you’re acting this way. You were so different last night. Why have you changed again? You’re the one losing your mind. There are no spirits in the woods, and I certainly didn’t conjure up any.”

Gyspsy Spirit tells the story of Annamarie and Daniel, recently married. But although Annamarie is in love with Daniel, Daniel  marries  for various reasons,  fear mainly… of not having her… and out of obligation to his parent’s requests.  The two have a difficult go at the beginning, with various disagreements which during one, Annamarie speaks a Gypsy curse in the heat of anger. But after tempers cool down, it is dismissed mainly by Annamarie as just something she made up, not to be taken seriously. But events that happened afterwards convinces Daniel that this is far from the truth. When one of his friends die, Daniel (who is terrified and pre-occupied with spirits) begs his wife to remove the curse. Which she adamantly states was a joke and nothing top worry about. But events worsened, and more deaths occur. The couple begin to have the same dream of a young girl who looks exactly like Annamarie. Daniel becomes terrified and he, their marriage and their lives begin to spin out of control.

I was hooked by this story right from the start. The interaction between the two young people and Daniel’s obsession kept me fascinated. The book developed steadily, with the author taking the time to introduce the reader to Annamarie, and Daniel, their marriage and the things that drove them. The world that they inhabited was made clear to the reader, and had a way of drawing me in as a reader. Once the dark things began happening, I was fully engrossed and was taken for a ride through the twist and turns of the plot. Intriguing and in parts frightening, I really was delighted with this book. There were a few humorous parts that provided relief from the darker points. The ending surprised me, literally it was NOT what I expected!

But over all Gypsy Spirits was a very impressive debut novel and I look forward to the next in the series.

I full recommend to any that enjoy the paranormal genre, I would rate it PG13 due to ( Strong language, and violence)

My Review

I enjoyed Star Seed’s Science Fiction element. I have not read many Sci Fi novels, thinking they might not be to my taste, but lately the ones I have come across have been very good, and I have found myself enjoying them. I felt the premise was a good one with the “Star Seed”, (those not from earth)… coming here to learn our ways. I felt the author did an superb job as far as the characters; she  showed  real growth in her main characters. Kaila started out as a seemingly unhappy teenager, very disgruntled with her family especially her mother and needed change. I believe Ms. Gruder did  an excellent job in showing Kaila’s metamorphosis.  It rang true to me the WHY also Kaila seemed to have such a negative view ,and why Kaila also seemed somewhat behind other adolescents her age in the handling of electronics, such as a Smart-phone and other aspects of modern society. Because she was protected by her mother especially, but family, to the point of suffocation, due to their fear, that those who came for Kaila’s mother when she was a teenager, would also come for Kaila. Also, the foil around the head and other precautions are just further aspects of their protection, which inhibited Kaila’s socialization(she was also home-schooled) and really was allowed to see no one due to this fear.

The author was on point with setting  up her world, a world that  was intolerant to those different from others. The story turned and the change began in Kaila when she was finally allowed to attend school and discovered who she was, and why she was here. Jordyn was the good looking boy who was just as much a captive to the expectations of those leading him, as Kaila was to her parents fear. He also made a incredible transformation at the end, deciding to stand for what he believed in and not what was dictated to him.

The pace was steady, there was no lagging or drawn out moments:) Great action when the Star Seeds true motives surfaced, and also some creepy moments with the ONE behind the Star Seeds showed himself.

I recommend Star Seed,I believe it is a story that would be enjoyed by Teens and Adults who like Science Fiction.

I was very excited with the opportunity to read Author Raine Thomas new title. I became a fan of Ms. Thomas books with her Estilorian series. I knew that FOR EVERLY, would be different from the books I became familiar with, and that I associated with Raine Thomas, but I was up for the adventure, and was not disappointed. I loved the story!

For Everly a New Adult novel followed the story of physical therapy student Everly Wallace and Major League Pitcher Cole Parker.

When Cole begins to have problems with his pitching shoulder, he is concerned that this would mean the end of his career. So with the help of his older brother, Cole is placed in the hands of Everly a brillant student who Cole is assured is more than qualified to treat his injury, while also keeping it out of the press. The two begin to work together, Everly slightly hesitant due to Cole’s reputation of being a womanizer, and with the responsibility of taking care of her ailing grandfather, paying the bills, and completing her degree Everly does not want to take a wrong turn. Although, her emotions betray her when in Cole’s presence, especially due to the fact, she had always been a major fan of the handsome ballplayer, she has the poster in her closet to prove it:) Also, due to the death of her mother and her brother’s suicide, it is difficult for Everly to become close to others. She feels safest when the barriers are up. But Cole, privileged and used to having what he wants, at first sees the young beauty as a challenge, but surprises many as well as himself at the real feelings he is soon to develop. But the growing love between the two is overshadowed by their pasts and when Everly is attacked and the danger increases, Cole realizes there is more than just his career that he’s fighting for, there’s Everly.

For Everly was a tender tale of second chances, forgiveness and the redeeming power of love. I thoroughly enjoyed how Ms. Thomas unfolded this beautiful love story; The story was innocent yet had a subtle passion underneath reminiscent  of first real love. The pace was perfect, with the friendship blossoming, and slowly evolving into more as a lovely surprise it seemed to the characters , although the reader was highly aware of the love that was between the two.  Cole was a complex character who piqued  my interest; one moment, fun-loving, hard drinking ladies man, he in turned showed such a tenderness towards Everly after her attack, it almost brought tears to my eyes. His passion showed whether for his career, his partying before Everly  then to Everly herself and what he knew to be true between them was evident. Whatever he did, he did to the fullest. I felt both characters were very developed and likable…

I enjoyed the fun moments in the books, when the characters in the book played a sexy Marco Polo game in the sauna, also I loved the photo shoot scene, where Everly was pulled to pose opposite Cole in an underwear  magazine shoot, and just the simple act of looking in one another’s eyes during that shoot, the way Ms. Thomas described it, had my cheeks burning! There was nothing in-appropriate, it simply very sensual…but simultaneously innocent???? How Ms. Thomas is able to create that balance is unknown to me:) But it worked, I enjoyed the flirtatious communication between the two, fun, sexy and wow Cole had me swooning at times, because I love a man with a sexy sense of humor:)

Also one of my favorite times was when Cole was speaking with his nephew Avery, it was a deep discussion on which superhero was best:) ,lol…and yes, I also believe BatMan was tops! ,lol I was also very impressed with the knowledge Ms. Thomas had of baseball, I ascertain she must be a fan herself, I loved the references to movies(I knew them all) and really this story is one of my favorites now.

I fully recommend this book if you enjoy a good Contemporary Romance.

What are your thoughts? Do you prefer the Contemporary love story versus Paranormal or another genre?

What is an attribute you look for in your favorite Character(s)?

Summary: Have you wondered what makes a good book review? Have you wondered what you might be missing in writing a book review? You can find out how to write a quality book review in these pages.

Rebecca Graf

A book review is a recommendation from you. Your review is telling your readers whether or not you recommend the book or suggest that they run very fast from it. Look at it like this. You are having coffee with a friend. Your conversation steers in a direction similar to this: “Hey, I just a read a book that you have got to read. I couldn’t put it down. Though the language could be a little foul, the plot was outstanding.”

Or the conversation could have gone this route: “I don’t understand the fascination with that book all over the news. I tried reading it and I couldn’t get past the first few chapters. It was horrible. There was no plot and everything was so confusing.” Both conversations are the beginnings of a book review and are a recommendation from you.

Yes, a book review is a critique, but in the end your review has to also give a recommendation regarding the book. You are suggesting your readers read it or not waste their money. If you are one that is honest with your reviews, people will listen. That is why you have to be very careful about what you say in a review. Don’t be personal. Don’t be biased. Let your friends know where you stand with the book, but give them good reasons. That is where the critique comes from. You can say you like the book or don’t like it, but tell your friends why. Your reasons might not be what turn your friends off of the book. I read one book that I just didn’t like. In critiquing it, the book wasn’t that bad. My readers could see that, but when I got to my recommendation I had to say the truth: “I really did not like the book. It was well written. The characters were entertaining, but the plot was not for me. For others, this might be an excellent book. If you like this genre, I highly recommend you give it a try and give your own review. For me, I’ll pass on the next one in the series.”

When you give a review, don’t forget to tell your recommendation to your readers. They want to know. You can critique it, but do you recommend it?

Okay Everyone, do you realize how nervous one can be in writing a review on a book regarding HOW to write book review?:) The aggravating nervousness which lies at the surface, “Am I doing this right? Is this the proper format? Has the right components?:)  But I will share my thoughts on How To Write a Book Review and hope I make Author Rebecca Graf proud:)

How To Write A Book Review, is a compiled resource for those who share their opinions in the love of books. It is a plethora of information that is given to lead and guide the reviewer step by step through the process of writing a well put together critique, that will assist others in knowing whether the book is a fit for them.

Topics within the book range from What is the purpose of a Review?, to dealing with Editing and Formatting Issues in a review. Here the various components of what should be in a review are discussed, such as reviewing style, plot, pacing and other details that give a clearer picture to other prospective readers, other than just a personal opinion. Yes, the recommendation  of whether the book was enjoyed or not by the reviewer is a major detail, but How To Write A Book Review, takes it one step further, and also helps the reviewer say “Why” it was or was not enjoyed.

I truly enjoyed this book, which I feel is an incredible resource for all, but especially those who view themselves as “Professional” reviewers. I believe that with the tips and techniques within these pages, then there truly can be a uniformity, and indeed a more professional quality with the reviews that we see across the net.

Reviews are needed of course by all writers, traditionally published as well as the Small Press and Independent Published Author. But for the latter reviews are the life blood of their marketing platform; and if authors take the time and effort to craft a good product, then it should be the reviewers desire to also study and craft a good product. Authors and Reviewers with education and a sense of pride in their work, can through teamwork, bring together readers and the titles that are meant just for them.

How To Write A Book Review is an excellent source to provide the structure to help reviewers, the pace of the book is steady and the writing style very conversational, almost as a chat between friends, therefore no dry text-book jargon. The language is clear and understandable. I also like the fact the book can be read as a whole, but also each chapter is a designated subject, that the reviewer can “go to” for specific help in particular areas. I believe this book is a source that should not be read and then discarded on a shelf, but one kept close for reference, when writing the words that will affect another’s work and livelihood.

I full recommend How To Write A Book Review for anyone who is ready to take their work to the next level.
