Review: SUNSHINE by Nikki Colligan

nikki colliganHello all:) I just wanted to share with you my thoughts of a new YA Paranormal Romance entitled SUNSHINE by Nikki Colligan

About this author
Nikki Rae is a student and writer who lives in New Jersey. When she is not writing, thinking, or reading, she is most likely hanging out with her gecko, Neil Gaiman, drawing in a quiet corner, or drinking tea by the gallon. Sunshine is her first book.
And my twitter is
Sunshine Cover

Synopsis: 18 year old Sophie Jean is pretty good at acting normal. Sure, she’s not exactly happy, but happiness is nothing compared to being like everyone else. She can pretend she’s not allergic to the sun. She can hide what her ex-boyfriend did to her. She can cover up the scars she’s made for herself. Ignore anything. Forget anything. Then Myles enters her life, and he has more than a few secrets of his own. When accident after accident keeps happening to Sophie, she can’t help noticing that he’s everywhere. That he knows too much. That she’s remembering too much.

It’s one thing covering up her own dark past, but does she really need to worry about people finding out just how much Myles likes her? Or that despite how much she doesn’t want to repeat past mistakes, she kind of likes him back? Not to mention the fact that she now has to conceal that Myles drinks blood-that he says he’s about four hundred years old. She almost forgot about that part. But Sophie has no plans to ruin the normal life she has created for herself. She can deal with this little glitch, no problem. Even if word has gotten around to the wrong vampire about Sophie and Myles, even if she’s putting the few people she loves at risk. Suddenly, those who were monsters before are just people, and the monsters? They’re real. Now being a normal human being is the least of her problems. Now she has to stay alive.

My Thoughts

Sunshine intrigued me from the start. The tale of a young woman with mysterious symptoms, that she nor her family seems to understand. The avoidance to sun, being a primary concern. Seemingly she is a normal teen, although there are hints of a traumatizing event that recently occurred which causes this young woman to appear strong, yet emotionally fragile simultaneously.
Then when a young man enters her life Myles, he also has an aura of mystery surrounding him, and his intentions are not clear at the beginning, whether he appears to be a friend to Sunshine or bring danger to her door.
I enjoyed Sunshine, although there was a layer of melancholy that covered the main character which provided and ironic contrast to her name Sunshine. But that did not deter from the beauty of the character, the way she viewed the world, her thoughts. I enjoyed the interactions between Sunshine and Myles, he also at once beautiful, seemingly, with no physical scarring or symptoms that would draw attention, he seemed  to hold a secret, that caused him to be able to relate to the mesmerizing Sunshine. There were very dramatic scenes within the book, one where Sunshine, is critically injured through self-mutilation, and Myles was there to aid her as a friend, as well as in a way that was particular to his abilities.(I do not wish to spoil anything here)
This was a very good read, edgy, I would say meant for older teens and adults (16 years and older)
There are tough subjects such as Rape, Self-Mutiliation

About Laura Deluca

Laura “Luna” DeLuca lives at the beautiful Jersey shore with her husband and three children. She has been writing stories for as long as she can remember. Old high school friends would tell you she was always scratching in her notebook instead of paying attention in class and the children she used to babysit for always loved to hear her scary stories at bedtime. In addition to writing fiction, Laura is also the sole author of a popular review blog called New Age Mama. She is an active member of her local pagan community, and has been studying Wicca for close to eight years.

When Justyn and Rebecca set off for the New York School of Performing Arts, they think their dreams are about to come true. To their dismay, they aren’t in high school anymore, and the competition is steep. Rebecca must compete against accomplished singers for a role in the production of Demon Barber, including a stunning Gothic diva with her sights set on Justyn.
It doesn’t help that things keep disappearing from their apartment or that Rebecca’s father refuses to accept that Justyn is an essential part of her life. Yet, all this seems minimal in comparison to the serial rapist terrorizing the campus.
Consumed by fear and obsessed with revenge, Rebecca and Justyn start living the story of Sweeney Todd—both on and off the stage.

Phantom was originally meant to be a stand alone novel. I wrote it about five years ago, but it was only published last April. Not long after the release of Phantom, I was watching this scene in Sweeney Todd and it occurred to me that Lord Justyn was made to play this role. I asked my publisher Angelique Mroczka what she thought about a Sweeney Todd inspired sequel. She told me the idea was “delightfully demented.”  Justyn borrows those words when he tells Becca what play they’re doing for their college debut.

The character of Lord Justyn was inspired by my friend Justyn Christofel, who is a real stage actor. Here are a few pictures of him performing at his local theater.

Phantom is the tale of high school wall flower Rebecca, who
throughout her entire highschool history, had been determined to stay on the
side lines, not wishing to bring any attention to herself. Now, in her senior
year, she appears to have actually succeeded in this goal, until the school
drama department decides to put on The Phantom of the Opera.

This is one
of Rebecca’s all time favorite productions, she is absolutely obsessed with it,
having all the fan gear, books and anything else she can set her hands on
regarding the subject. What many at Rebecca’s school, except her closest
friends…Carmen and Debra…do not know is that Rebecca can sing extremely
well. So on the spur of the moment, Rebecca decides to try out, and after
singing the song of the play’s main character Christine, which no one else was
able to do; Rebecca was actually given the lead role. Now Rebecca is not only
thrust into the lime light, she is now the center of a boy feud between the
leading man, Justyn; and the hero of the play, Tom, who Rebecca had been
crushing on since her Freshman year. Life intimates art, as the two boys begin
to vie for her attention. Also, things begin to heat up, as accidents begin to
plague the production, showing Rebecca, that someone doesn’t want her to have
the part, the boy or even possibly her life…

My Thoughts

Phantom was
exciting from the very first page, I was intrigued actually at the very
beginning due to this fresh, unique take on a YA novel…I found it extremely
thrilling:) I was familiar with the Phantom Of The Opera, but this story brought
it alive to me and peaked my interest enough that I wanted to know more about
the original. I found that this story would be a wonderful way for today’s YA
readers to be introduced to the classic, and that really impressed

Although, the subject intrigued me, and drew me into the story; Ms.
Deluca’s storytelling kept me reading. She is truly a gifted writer; the story
had equal amounts of romance without getting too sappy, and adventure without
being worn out:) plus, the mystery she threaded through the story was superbly
done; Clues were given, I loved how she used the dialogue from the Phantom
Opera, as the messages to the young heroine in the book.

Again, I saw
that as a great way for young people to be introduced to this classic story. I
never saw the twist at the end, and I am usually pretty good at figuring out
mysteries at times, but I was floored to be honest, with whom the modern day
phantom truly was! Ms. Deluca carried the mystery, leading the reader where she
wanted them to go and keeping them entertained the entire time.

I really
enjoyed this book, and I am a big fan of Ms. Deluca’s and look forward to more
works from this author!

Giveaway & Cover Art Reveal for Maiden Behind the Mask

Guest Post: Tara Chevrestt-

You know you’ve done something right in the cover art department when you see not one, but two just like it show up on your Facebook or Amazon feed. Only different titles and author names.

When Maiden Behind the Mask was first published, it had a home with a publisher. Now, the image I wanted and put on the art form was declared too expensive. If you’re an author, you’ve been there. With much grumbling and sighing, I searched for stock art images that looked like a Spanish woman in 1800s Los Angeles (then a part of Mexico) dressed as Zorro.

That saying “looking for a needle in a haystack…”

I found a blonde, I found an Asian with way-too-modern bangs, I found lace masks, beaded masks, feathered, masks, women half naked wearing weird masks, pointy-nosed masks, but no women Zorros.

We got as close as we could.

Three weeks later the publisher crashed and people told me I should get new art anyway. The art wasn’t working for them. (If they only knew how very hard it was making that cover…)

I had cover two for a while. It’s a great cover, but it began to irritate me. It would be perfect if my heroine was running around in a lace mask a dress with a pearl belt. Again, it was the closest we could find that was in the budget. The artist did a superb job.

Regardless, being the type of person who is just plain irritated by discrepancies in covers—they must match the story!—I made a third cover. It wasn’t a lady Zorro, but a Spanish senorita looking coyly over a fan. Because when Catalina Rodriguez isn’t saving damsels in distress, she’s a lovely senorita…with a lot of mischief up her sleeves…

Oh, I made such a good choice. Everyone loved it…and then I saw it twice more…the exact image with no changes made to it at all. Three identical book covers!

But the good news is…that image the publisher said was too expensive? The image I originally wanted…is now my cover.

Who says dreams don’t come true? Perhaps this weird twist of fate was just a nudge toward getting what I originally wanted.

Behold…the new Maiden Behind the Mask artfully created by Christie A. C. Gucker!

BTM4 the official

When Catalina Rodriguez is attacked by a would-be rapist and rescued by the dashing Ricardo Garcia, she not only becomes more aware of the handsome man, but also vows that she’ll never be a damsel in distress again. Using the timeless method of blackmail, she convinces her uncle to teach her to fight and becomes a masked crusader in the night, saving other damsels from robbers and rough handling.

However, scandalous rumors and dwindling funds force Ricardo and Catalina to marry. Not immune to each other’s charms, their marriage starts fiery, but when one of Catalina’s nightly escapades results in dire consequences, she is forced to spurn her husband’s amorous advances…or reveal a secret that could turn him away from her forever.

Ricardo’s not a man to be cuckolded or left in the dark. Is his wife having an affair with El Capitan, the masked savior? If so…they will both pay.
